Joint Pain

What Are The Options For Joint Pain Treatment?

Joints are the parts of the body that connect your bones. They are responsible for stability and movement. Any damage to a joint caused by a disease or injury can interfere with your ability to move and result in severe pain. Joint pain can be caused by many different conditions, and the most common include rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, bursitis, sprains, strains, and other health issues and injuries.

.

Joint pain can be mild, moderate, or deliberating. Sometimes, it goes away after a few weeks. However, in other cases, it can become chronic, and then it requires a visit to a doctor, who will examine the affected joint and make a diagnosis.

Depending on the type, severity, and cause of joint pain, there are different treatment options. Usually, a doctor will prescribe one of the following:

  • Medications.  Patients with moderate and severe pain are prescribed with over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen sodium. There is also a new generation of anti-inflammatory medications, such as Cox-2 inhibitors. It is important though to discuss the medications you are going to take with your doctor first because they may have side effects.
  • Injections. Steroid injections are usually prescribed to patients with tendinitis or arthritis. It is an effective type of join pain relief but in most situations the effect is temporary. It also can be dangerous to get injections too often because of the risk of overusing the joint and damaging it even more.
  • Physical therapy.  A physical therapist can help you strengthen the muscles around the affected joint and improve the range of motion. A therapist usually uses such treatments as cold and heat therapy, ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation, and manipulation. He can also recommend such activities as swimming, walking, or cycling in order to lose weight if you are overweight and relieve the pressure on the joints.

How Can a Chiropractor Help?

Chiropractors use a non-invasive, non-addictive, and gentle therapy known as a chiropractic adjustment. This therapy has proven to be effective in reducing joint restrictions and improving the functions of affected joints and nervous system. Regular chiropractic care helps alleviate pain (both chronic and acute) and improve mobility.
